Congratulations on Your New Swimming Pool!

here is our process

Thank you for choosing Mid Penn Electric to wire your new swimming pool from Valley Pools. Since most people don’t know what to expect when having a swimming pool installed, much less what to expect from the electrician, we wanted to make sure that you have as much information as possible.

There are several stages to the wiring of every swimming pool: Rough-in, Final and Final Electrical Inspection.

The Rough-in stage is where we install the conduit from your electrical panel to the spot in your yard where the filter pad will eventually be installed. This conduit is used to protect the wiring that will be supplying electricity to your pool equipment. During our first visit, we will determine the best path from the electrical panel to the filter pad and install the conduit. This involves installing conduit inside the house from the electrical panel to the point where the conduit will exit the house. From this point to the filter pad, the conduit will be installed underground, unless your filter pad is located against your house. In order to install the underground conduit, we will bring a trenching machine to dig an 18” deep trench in which to bury the conduit. The conduit will then be installed in the trench. Depending on what township you live in, the trench might be inspected by a third-party inspector at this point. Once the conduit is in place and any necessary inspections are complete the trench will be backfilled. Depending on the situation, we might pull the wire through the conduit at this time.

For the Rough-in stage we will need access to the portion of your house where your electrical panel is located which is usually in your garage or basement. We will do our best to keep you up to date about which day we will be there. Unfortunately, the schedule can change frequently. The swimming pool schedule is greatly affected by weather. Since we need to do our work during a certain stage of the pool building process, bad weather, even weeks before we are scheduled to rough-in your pool, can slow down excavation, shell installation, etc. This might affect the date for the electrical Rough-in.

We will do the Rough-in between the time when the pool installers backfill around the shell and installation of the concrete deck.

The Final stage is where we install the equipment post. This happens the first weekday after the liner is installed. If your liner is installed on a Friday, we try our best to do it on the same day so your pool is ready to use over the weekend. Just like during the Rough-in, we will need to have access to your electrical panel.

During this stage, we install your equipment disconnect post. This post is located at the filter pad and on it are the pump disconnect switch, a switch for the pool light, a convenience receptacle, the pool timer and any necessary transformers. If the wire has not been pulled through the conduit yet, it will be done at this time. We will also wire all the equipment at the filter pad including the pump, heater and light.

Finally, there will be a Final Electrical Inspection which will be performed by a third-party inspector. More than likely, the inspector will also need to have access to your electrical panel.

There are a few other times that you might see us on your property, such as when we need to install conduit for lighting or other features around the pool. This usually occurs after the shell is assembled and before the backfill around the shell. We do not need access to the interior of the house for this work. You will also see someone from each of the utilities a few days before Rough-in. They are there to mark the underground utilities so that we don’t hit them with the trenching machine.

Hopefully this information is helpful. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call or send us a message. We are here to serve you. We realize that a project of this size can be a bit overwhelming and we want to make this process as smooth as possible for you.
